Hi all,

Has anyone attempted wicking pots in a tent grow? I assume it would be a soil based/ living soil grow set up.

I've only tried coco grows and the daily mixing and watering is a pain. @templegrower is an advocate of living soil for the reduced need to water frequently, but was wondering about wicking pots as nek level?

Wicking pots I refer to are a bucket or container based system with a pipe vertically down corner of container and then bent 90deg and along bottom, with holes in bottom section to distribute new water to bottom of container. There's about 6" of gravel/stones covering pipe on bottom, geotextile or shade cloth over stones and soil on top.

There's an overflow pipe set at top of gravel height so you can fill gravel reservior section through vertical fill pipe to point of overflow and soil "wicks" water up from gravel section and plants roots remain moist but not saturated. Leads to constant feeding.

Anyone tried or have a good system worked out?

Schematic below.

@whereistoss If I remember correctly I think @chillbert did something similar in his conservatory for his cucumbers and it was pretty successful. There are a few living soil growers advocate bottom watering. 👍

@whereistoss these systems work very well bro- @Spartan Grown uses one for his homegrow

I have used them as mentioned for growing cucumbers, tomatoes etc in my conservatory… I would use to grow herb too but I’m growing in loft so use smaller pots up there

Time to pop some more beans 😗

Thank @3plantspete, @chillbert any learnings that your cucumber experiment could apply to indoor? One downside would be practicalities in moving the system in and out for cleaning if too big. But seen some examples in 5gal/ 20L buckets retrofitted, but for herbs and veggies outdoors that may work.

@whereistoss its very easy system to use as you cant really overwater and just need to keep bottom reservoir topped up. you need to top water a bit start until plants get their roots down. think i used 60L (about 15-18gallon approx). i can get away with watering once a week in this system depending on ambient temps etc.. so good for weekends away etc

good luck and have fun with it  bro

didnt use many supplements as everything needed was pre-loaded into the soil..

i did topdress with plant clippings continually (as a mulch), and charge and compost once each over the season.

if i were going to apply a compost tea i would certanily top water it into the soil not the reservoir as this would likely be intended to feed the soil not the plant!

the only thing that went down the tube was water!

good luck bro
