Growing weed in a coffee mug using coco/pearlite, first attempt by monkeydo
Monkeydo attempts to grow an Amnesia Fast clone all the way to harvest in a regular coffee mug with a drainage hole drilled through
Recycled coco flushed and rebuffered and with 20% pearlite
Size of Grow Area and number of plants:
The grow will be fit in wherever I can find the space in the tent. The tent is 36 x 20 x 62 inches, 0.9 x 0.4 x 1.6 meter, Cool Grows tent
Three Mars Hydro SP150 led lights, 138 watts each, 400+ watts total
Externally mounted 6 inch Vortex 347 cfm in-line fan with speed control and iPower 6inch carbon filter
The entire grow all the way to harvest will be run in a standard coffee mug.
Advanced Nutrients Sensi Bloom Coco A + B, Botanicare cal/mag plus, GH Diamond Nectar (humic acid)
Apera ph20 meter, Hone Forest TDS meter, Hydrofarmer quantum par meter
Plan for the grow:
This is my first attempt to grow in small containers. The plan is high frequency fertigation and a lot of luck.
This grow has already started and I’m attempting to rebuild a diary from day one. The plant is the cloned top from another grow that just happened to be handy when the idea took shape.
The mug was prepared by drilling a hole in the bottom
The clone was planted in coco with 20% pearlite and put under a dense canopy in the tent to adjust to the powerful lights. Even in a small coffee mug the plant looks lost.
It spent almost two week gradually moving to brighter spots in the tent till it was about 18 inches from the light at about 600um/m2 light intensity. The entire time the plant was on 12/12 lights and put straight to bloom and fed bloom nutes at EC 1.0
The process of finding a way to hold the plant at the proper position in the tent brought out the inventor in every grower. An old plastic container, some paracord, and scrap pvc pipe and my mug has a niche.
She hangs in the corner and is happy as can be. At this point I was hand watering 4 times a day, fortunately with the quarantine I had the time.
With a catch up diary I can fast forward to 2 weeks ago and my little “Annie” started flowering
At this point the fertigation demands were more than I was willing to continue manually so it’s time to build a micro auto water system. I’ve taken to long to do all this catch up writing so tomorrow hopefully the diary will be brought up to date. More later......... Thanks for reading!
So it was 2 weeks ago that flowering began. At this point the plant was very happy with its circumstances apparently.
When flowers began to appear the plant was positioned in the tent so as to receive light at about 700 to 800 par. With my creative answer to location the adjustments were easy, just raise or lower the plant by shortening/lengthening the cord.
My current grow is only weeks from harvest and the foliage is rough but the buds are fat and sticky. For now “Annie” lives in the midst of the dank. When harvest is done I’ll have to figure out where she will go as I can’t devote an entire tent to a coffee mug.
Annie is now past 2 weeks in flower and the increased nutrition demands on the rhizosphere are starting to become a challenge.
Flowers are stacking nicely despite Annie’s petite size. Lower fan leaves are beginning to show deficiencies and I’m starting to see some tip and edge leaf burn on the canopy. This is unusual to me as it looks like Annie is hungry and overfed at the same time. The ec has been at 1.0 for the entire run so I decided to do a full RO water flush and reset the mug with ec solution around.7 Hopefully the lower ec will allow her to feed more efficiently. These are the before pictures. The deficiencies aren’t bad as yet.
With such a small rhizosphere it appears the best course might be to increase the fertigation schedule if the problem continues. My current timer can set nine intervals and can be programmed to include only seconds of run time if needed. I set the fertigation to run 22 seconds every 2 hours with the light on and every 4 hours with lights off, 9 fertigation cycles per 24 hours. The plant gets 6 ounces per feeding. The Rube Goldberg system needed to deliver the solution slowly enough to allow absorption into the media and fast enough to properly flush the media was fun to create. My answer was something similar to a hospital I.V. system. Here’s a pic of it in my shop being tested.
A small fountain pump is in the bucket. The pump delivers solution to the green bottle for a few seconds. The bottle has a tube at the bottom that leads to the plant. The tube is pinched with a c clamp to slow the gravity flow of water to the plant. Here’s a video of it working.
If you happened to notice debris in the bottle, it was cleaned out before I moved the rig to the tent. One of my other digital timers can accept 20 off/on program points so if Annie continues to make a fuss I can further increase the fertigation sessions frequency. One thing that concerns me is the very dark green color. This is a Sativa domain strain and I’m not used to seeing that color on Sativa but I am far from an expert with respect to strains and this tight space is creating challenges. Monitoring the ec this morning the input was just under .7 and the output was at .613 Those are better numbers and constant monitoring is probably necessary.
Apologies for this lengthy post but I do appreciate you reading this. Any input you would care to offer would be helpful. Growing in a micro container is new and challenging to me and the more feedback I get the better results that might get. The big mug grow off is coming so here’s what I have learned so far. My conservative goal is to reach harvest with at least enough weed for a couple/few good quality joints. This strain has an advertised flowering time of 8 weeks so at least 6 weeks to go. If it goes that far I’ll call it a win whatever happens. Stay tuned .... more in the weeks to come😀
Problem solving at its best love the set up
That is quality mate!
Flower day 18
With some changes in nutes and lights, lol the grow experiment looks back on track. Double checking all the nutes, a significant nitrogen level and iron level was in evidence.
A & B (together) 4.4.5
First thing was to change to GH calmag 1.0.0 Next was to significantly lower Sensi Bloom which was high in both nitrogen and iron. Final nutes:
6 liters water
1.75ml A & B
.75 grams PK
2ml Diamond Nectar
The final EC was just under 0.700
I also eliminated one SP150 light as the current crop is in flush and doesn’t need the extra energy and It is a bit less stressful to the mug grow, lower demands from the plant.
So far she had adjusted well to the changes. The original injuries are hardening off and she looks less stressed. The extra dark leaf color is fading slightly as well so I’m pleased with this so far
the EC is stable as well
To be safe the mug is getting way more run through than normal. Six liters last about two days right now.
looking good man and if she is drinking plenty she is happy
Day ? of Flower
Yesterday I started to notice a little yellowing of the lower leaves. Thinking it could be a deficiency my response was to add a light tea mix to the nutes. Much to my surprise the yellowing bottoms yesterday were now very different.
with no experience I asked in chat and the consensus is Annie is finishing up early. Thanks to the experts advice, you guys know who you are!! At this point the switch to ripening nutes is in order so today the mix contains some carbs, "Overdrive" With luck she will be able to fatten that cola some more but the thing feels hard as a rock today but not very frosty.
It looks like Karma is helping me out here. The tent will be free sooner than I thought now so there might not be any need to modify the next run at all. There's no reason not to try this again with autoflowers on the next cycle. Got more Californian Snow auto beans than I need so why not play a little more.
Monkey that is something else man 👏👏😁
Flower Day? Update
Flower ripening looks to be continuing. Some of the colors are really nice on this micro grow now and as the ripening goes on some of the leaves slowly drop as they fade to pale yellow. Fertigation is still 9x a day and EC is staying at .560 for now. Trichomes are milky but no amber yet.
as Annie keeps heading towards the end she keeps evolving her looks. I have absolutely no idea when this will actually finish tho.
Monkey this is fuckin awesome!
Week 6 Flower
Not very much different this week. Fertigation continues 9x daily and the feed is unchanged at EC input at .560 Looking at the trichomes says she still isn’t near the end yet.
No signs of finishing so far. This might actually go the full 9 weeks.
Week 7 Flower
Not much to say but all looks good. No real sigh of ripening so maybe 2 weeks more
the entire tent is taken up by one budsickle!
Frost continues to build but no amber as yet
till next week.... all for now.
Week 8 Flower
”Annie” hasn’t changed loads lately. Her color is darkening as she ripens. The only change is her res mixture. She has been on flush now for a few days, ph rainwater only. This grow has really turned almost automatic for the last month. Refill the res and dump waste, that’s it! 9x daily fertigation made this almost easy and simple in the end.
She is a very easy to photograph subject. Bud is super frosty but still no amber trichomes but the trichs are swelling nicely
Another week will probably finish her. Thanks for reading all. Questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome.
Week 9+ Flower
The day has finally come, just a couple days short of 10 weeks flowering now and time for the chop. This plant has become just as much a pet as a crop and I’m finding myself hesitant at this point in the grow. The lights were turned off 24 hours ago and she will be harvested in the morning. At least the trim will be very fast. One last look
She has really developed a deep purple color with nice fall highlights. We had some cool nights very early in the grow and that triggered all this color. The real surprise was the root ball
Although the coco is nearly compost the root system wasn’t that bad for a tiny grow. The 9 fertigations per day allowed the roots to easily support the plants needs without stress. All in all this was a very successful experience. Learned a lot and plan to do this often. I’ll post the chop later.
This diary was the real afterthought for me but at this point I’m very glad it happened. One regret is I didn’t take the time here that I should have to respond to some comments but I’ll say now that the kind words and helpful advice keep me going and thanks guys. Can’t wait for the mugoff!
Excellent job bro looks epic, great work
