Hello,
As my name suggests I am completely new to the world of growing. I have a back uard, North Facing, but a section gets bright sun. Was thinking of growing one plant initially in a pot. Would this be possible logistically? I only vape around 14g of bud a month, along with CBD concentrate but would like to be self sufficient.
Any absolute beginner advice would be gratefully appreciated:)
@absolutebeginner Welcome to Percys mate! Yer it is definitely possible, but security is an important factor, will any one be able to see or smell the plant?

@absolutebeginner hey mate, welcome to percys. All of us started where you are right now, so a few quick questions so we can help you better.
Where abouts are you in the world? Time of year will matter more than the direction of the sun depending where you are located. Do you have a strain in mind or strains in mind? I would recommend starting with feminised seeds and I would run at least 1 of a thc strain and 1 of a cbd strain, you can also opt for a 1:1 thc:cbd strain but bear in mind that you can't really separate them and if you wish to make cbd oils or concentrates then a high cbd strain would be much better for that.
The next thing to consider is your medium, if you are looking at outdoors I would suggest a living soil, @templegrower has a perfect recipe for a living soil that is easy to put together and the components can be found at most garden centres. A living soil will require less nutrient input throughout the grow so for a new grower can be easier to learn how the plant grows and matures without worrying too much about nutrient schedules etc.
Once you have made your decision on those few things it will get the ball rolling for you

Sativa to change the things I can, Indica to accept the things I can’t.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I am based in Northern England, so not the best climate unfortunately.
I'm aware that there are certain strains that are more suited for outdoor UK growing but I favour relaxing indicas. Hopefully nobody would see the plant, I would have so called complimenting plants near it and a high wall.
What time frame would I be looking at from seed to harvest?
@absolutebeginner welcome to Percy’s mate and good luck with your very first grow. If you are growing in N England outside then look at Autoflower plants if you want a quick turnaround. The auto will begin flowering in about one month after sprouting and come to harvest a lot faster than photo period plants. Photo period plants won’t begin to flower till August because they require at least 12 hrs of darkness to flower and won’t be ready for harvest till October-November timeframe. Autoflowering plants don’t need a light/dark cycle to trigger bloom, it’s gonna bloom no matter what time of year it it.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Look forward to learning from the pros.
@absolutebeginner Welcome to an awesome place, mate! You have already received some great advice, but let me throw this out for consideration. I totally agree with @Bubblehok about choosing an auto and going with soil, but keep in mind that a larger pot will be easier to deal with than a smaller one. I'd go for something that is at least 25 liters with good drainage which will be easier to manage.
You said you are an absolute beginner, so are you aware of the 3 ground rules: no tell, no smell, no sell? As @Macky pointed out, you don't want to underestimate the importance of security, or how much a plant can smell. You mentioned a yard, so if you have next-door neighbors in an urban setting, I would advise to you to not go down that road because the smell will definitely get your neighbors' attention later in the summer. If you are in a more rural setting, then I would be less concerned.
Dutch Passion has Frisian Duck, which is better suited for a stealthy backyard kind of grow (it is on my list to try one day), because its leaves has mutations that make it less recognizable and the it smells less until the final two weeks. However, it is not an autoflowering strain so harvest would be much later.
That may be a little discouraging, but I'm just being honest because we want you to be successful, and not catch any trouble. Hope that helps!
