Hi everyone, I’ve been growing outdoors in Northern California for 16 years. We just noticed something on some leaves we’ve never seen. Hoping someone can identify what’s going on. The
y are these tiny stems with nodules at top.
I sure wish I had a higher resolution closeup. Without a better image 🤷🏻♂️ First reaction was mealy bugs but WPM maybe as well. Is that a webbing like string that I’m seeing stretching towards the right?

@macky thanks for replying! I have never seen pm like that. Can you see the tiny “ hairs” coming up and off? They do brush off easily. We definitely have caterpillars in our orchard. Been a few years since we’ve seen evidence in the garden next to it. So you think I should spray something? Or maybe just atomizer with soapy water to knock them off? We’re starting to bloom and the plants look good.
Interesting.. tiny stems with nodules at the top sounds like a fruiting body of a fungus (a mushroom). But I've never seen a fungus like that.. powdery mildew does fruit like that but its conidia (spore-bearing hyphae, not a mushroom per se) are microscopic, and much smaller than what you have in your picture. But I am also not a mycologist so, grain of salt and all that, haha.
Powdery Mildew conidia (scroll down to middle of page)
Or, maybe it's eggs attached to silken threads or something..? A small spider perhaps?

Try a google search for mealy bugs:
These white and hairy bugs enjoy warm temperatures and don’t tolerate the cold. They have even been known to grow and spread even on a drying plant after harvest, so watch out! They also leave patches of what appears to be white mold (sometimes confused with WPM), powder or webbing
Not the best picture but looks very familiar
Solution, Soapy water or alcohol solution
