Hey guys
I recently joined the forum and wanted to say hi 🖐️
Been a listener to the podcast for a couple of months now and back when it was on the cheap homegrow podcast. I attempted a grow back at uni about 15 years ago now that sadly I had to chop just after flipping to flower and the bugs never left me.
Next month I finally get to move into a place that gives me a nice empty loft space so finally I can start looking at becoming self sufficient.
I plan on having a 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.8m attic tent, growing between 4-6 plants in organic living soil and insulating the loft to the best of my ability.
I have some regular seeds that I really want to use and I wanted to know what you all think the best practise would be in using these? Is there a good method for me to use to identify males early? Or would it be better to add a small veg tent?
I imagine it would be a lot easier if I wasn't attempting the living soil route as I know I'm going to need some big pots for this and was thinking if I find out that 3 out of 4 are males I've wasted a lot of time and floor space due to the pot size?
Any advice would be ace. 😀
@yoshi yo hows luigi? 🤣 coco grower here , but given its your first time in a new set up with female seed you guaranteed good fruit , And im not sure if you need to transplant them then sex with regs or soil tbh
Sucking ⛽
@yoshi Welcome to Percys. I use regular seeds quite often, If there is a way to tell early I haven't found it. Seen a lot of myths on the internet and haven't found any that worked.
I just grow them until im ready to flip and cull the males soon as they show its usually around 50/50. I just toss the soil used back into my soil bin to be re amended for the next run.

Thanks guys, I've had this nickname for a while now 🤣
I figured that it was probably the case that I would have to wait until the flip to sex them. Would it probably be better to assume that I'm going to loose a few to being males, so I should veg 8 plants (instead of 4-6) so If I have to chop a few I can still fill out the area?
I guess if I was going to do this I would either need to repot during flower, or possibly just use a bed/shared pots instead?
@yoshi hi mate
Nice move joining here 👍
Am a soil loft grower... atm playing around with different soil blends, living soils etc
If you can source feminised versions of the desired seed will be so much easier ...
if not then a separate veg tent to pre-flower then dump males.. then transplant and re-veg..
this adds a few weeks to your schedule and puts stress on plants but you’ll not have males in your grow
If your loft is properly insulated possible to grow without a tent but tents easier to climate control ..
Good luck and happy growing bro
its a lovely way to grow 👍
my open loft set up atm
(
5 plants in veg tent out of shot)

@yoshi Why not just use fem seeds mate? But for telling the sex, you need to veg them for ages before they show any sign of preflower, sya about 6-8 weeks. And the preflowers are really hard to see too. The best way to tell the sex is by flipping it to flower. Then waiting until the flowers come. It will be about 50/50 like twisted said.
With reg, what most people would do is grow a few plant, say 4, and you are sure to get a good female out of it, unless you're really ulucky lol.
The use that female plant as a mother so you can be sure the plants you grow are female This would be the better option IMO. Or fem seeds Welcome to Percys man

To sex seedlings I germinate and grow out for 10 days on 20/4 light hrs then switch to 12/12 (kept in small pots)
then watch for growth patterns and balls or pistels
This takes from 10 days to 2 weeks roughly
males will tend to grow taller, faster than their sisters and often less branchy growth (more upward)
internode spacing is bigger also but you can’t be sure until you see the pollen sacks (balls) start to form or the treasured pistels.
check the grow guides here too which give great advice on this 👍

Thanks for the replies guys.
It's the genetics I was really wanting to try (crazy chem cross) but I think im running before I can walk getting in to re-vegging etc. Maybe it would be best to get some feminized seeds and and possibly just two regulars to see how it goes and worst case I loose two plants to being males.
Maybe I can try to clone the regulars after they show sex and then i will have some plants already in veg after my first harvest?
@yoshi I just start extras then cut the males out soon as they show. does make it hard to fill the tent completely if you dont have the extra veg space but you may aslo end up with extra females that will help fill the space up.
If your concern is with filling all available space then fem seeds are needed, if not give regs a go, youll still get a good harvest
