Hey, yeah your're exactly correct - jus t blend the ingredients up and literally dump them on to the top of the soil. I like between 1-2" of material. Spread it evenly and water it as usual. Nothing to it.

As for the additional bone meal, I would stick with one or the other.. just in case something doesn't work (or works too well) it is easier to deal with less variables, if that makes sense. Keep it simple basically. 🙂

@lowegrow you should be logged into the chat automatically when you log into the forum. Try logging out, then log back in and then try chat. It’s worked for me and several others that way. Let us know if the problem persists.

@templegrower here is the plant tonight. She is due water tomorrow when I wake up so I guess I’ll do the bone meal then? With just regular amount of water? Also, what is making the top leaves look like this?

Yep, that stuff looks fine. And yeah, just sprinkle about 1/4 - 1/2 cup it on the top of the soil, or better yet, blend it in some plain potting soil and spread that around evenly, and then water as usual.

As for the weird looking leaves.. in my experience that's what happens when the pH is too high and starts locking out nutrients. But if you say your pH is around 6.5, then I am not too sure... maybe some unhappy roots perhaps? Tough to say.. if in doubt, I always flush em out.. usually seems to reset the soil and clear up whatever was going on, but yeah. That's a tough one..

@templegrower so do I flush before or after adding the bone meal? Flushing won’t kill flush out all the nutrients from my soil will it? If I do will I have to add nutrients back in since it won’t be a “super soil” once it’s flushed?

You would wanna flush before but, no worries. The bone meal is slow release and so won't be 'washed out' of the medium like ionic salt based ferts would. Same goes for your supersoil - the nutes contained within shouldn't be able to be washed out so easily. When I flush, I am really only trying to 'reset' my soil, mostly to bring pH back to a level I can be sure of, but as well as to rinse out any nasties that might be building up, like I mentioned about my snapdragons.. the run-off was orange when it first started coming out but eventually turned into to clear, clean water, and the plants really perked up in the next week or so. Not sure what that was but whatever it was, flushing helped to remove it. That's a very specific case though, and probably not what's going on with yours but, just an example of why flushing can be good.

As for your application, yeah looks okay to me. 👍. You could spread a but of plain soil over top of it to stop it from potentially clumping/looking/smelling kinda nasty, lol. But not necessary. Just water as normal now, trying to saturate the pot enough to see a few drips of runoff, and being sure to have the pot raised above the catch pan so the runoff can drip into it, rather than have the pot just sit in it.

@templegrower yep I’ve been keeping it on a cookie sheet over the catcher tray for the run off. I will flush the plant. Should I do it next water feeding or just today even though I watered yesterday? Also, how much do I use to flush? Never done that so don’t really know a ballpark amount of water to use

Well, every pot/medium combination will be different but, I always shoot for about 1/2 to 3/4 the volume of the pot to come out as runoff if I flush. So for example, I use 3 gallon pots so, I would want to see at least 1.5 gallons (~6L) of runoff before I would be happy. Just make sure your soil is draining well - you don't want water just sitting there very slowly percolating through. If that happens, that might be a different issue altogether, i.e. soil compaction/poor drainage, which can cause issues in the root zone as well (oxygen deficiency leading to anerobic conditions... not good). If your soil is well drained though, this won't be an issue. And looking at the pics of it, it looks pretty airy so, you're probably okay there.

The setup I like to use is pictured below. You probably don't need to worry about all that testing stuff (unless you really wanna get technical lol). I was trying to figure out my pH issues and wanted to monitor the runoff to see how it changed over time. If you have any litmus or pH paper, you can use it to test the drips as they come off the bottom of the pot to get a general idea of where your pH is at as well - not necessary but interesting. Might be helpful for future issues but, the main thing is to flush it out. I use this grate/pail setup so I can avoid mess and catch and test the runoff.  The colour will probably be a brownish colour too, like you see below.

Oh, and it's best to use the purest water you can find so, distilled/de-ionized is great, RO is good as well. Avoid tap water or 'spring' water as it can have a lot of dissolved solids in it, which is what we are trying to get rid of.

Flush station
Ready to flush
Catching runoff
Litmus too basic!
Runoff from flushing about 6.6pH with 600ppm TDS

@templegrower thank you so much! So based off that I information I should be using a lot of water to flush the soil. I have noticed that even yesterday giving it 45-50 oz of water that I didn’t get too much run off. I have been using spring water this whole time! I read that distilled was bad.. so regular distilled water is ok?

Well, distilled is best for flushing as it contains nothing but pure H2O, but for normal watering, spring water is fine for that. As long as it's at the right pH.
