Looks like this section is all mine. Lol.
I have an article from the early 70s. I clipped NASA and science articles from the news. One had a hydroponic setup with one tomato plant. They claimed to get 5,000 pounds of tomatoes from one plant. That always stuck with me. Lol. Then, when I got older and considered growing cannabis I knew the method I'd try.
I use a mix of hydroton (baked clay pellets) and growstones, a pumice like product made of recycled glass. I have used the same rocks for years, sterilizing between harvests. I had no place to dispose of either soil or coco coir, so it was the perfect choice. I stick with it because of results and I don't want to dispose of soil or coco. I have to wonder how much I've saved on them. Bottom line, I like growing hydroponics with the medium I use. I do take heat for it though. I get mocked. Lol. Whatever!
I have been using General Hydroponics nutrients but am switching to Jack's powdered nutes. It's much cheaper, between 3 and 1 cents a gallon. Greengenes has youtube videos on the product. Plus, GH was bought out by a megacorp, and that kind of stinks.
I use beneficial microbes and micos too. Mammoth P made a hell of a difference in harvest. They say 16% increase in yield, I believe it.
I use a low profile hydro set up with a shallow tray on the floor and pumps moving the nutes back and forth. I was using ebb and flow but I gained at least 15" in extra height because of the table. Seeing as though my room is six feet tall you can imagine it makes a hell of a difference. I have a lid on the tray. My plants hang down like a DWC but spread out on the tray. Last run the roots were a 3' roundish mat. It was great! Really fat and thick.
I've done quite well with this system and have avoided most pests because of the cleanliness.
Anyone else in the world still running hydroton?
I think Twisted has just started using it mate, you should check out some of his diaries You got some pics of your setup? Sounds interesting

Agree as well @artmann
That system really sounds interesting, would like to see it if we could
Dig a little hole, plant a little seed, wait a little while, smoke a little weed!
Here are a few photos. One with the lid, one without so you can see. My room is 6 feet tall. The tray is 44" x 44" x 6" deep. The pots hang above the tray. The roots grow down and spread wide. The tray sits on a sheet of plywood 1"off the cold concrete floor. I found a huge reservoir lid that fit. I cut 4 square holes in it. There is a pump on a timer in my reservoir (outside the grow room) that fills the tray. The pump in the tray then moves the nutrients back to the reservoir. I'm upgrading my reservoir to a 50 gallon. I have a chiller and aquarium heater in a glass Pyrex cooking pan in the bottom. There are two pH dosers that keep me between 5.8 - 6.0. One for up and one for down. I use square pots I melted holes in myself because the round ones tend to creep out of the hole because the plants are bent sideways under the double scrog. Ha ha. It has worked much better than I thought it would. I read hydro adds 30% in harvest and cuts between 10 and 15% off the time it takes. I believe it. I have CO2 as well. With all that and micos/Mammoth P it's kicking.
Tidy little setup there mate, I mainly run coco but I live on rural property and have Plenty of space to dispose of the coco when its spent, however I am going to dive into a bit of DWC again next year. I have seen some big yields in soil but personally the biggest yields I have had(from a single plant indoors) have been in coco (apart from the big monster outdoor guerilla grows we used to do as kids hahah), as for hydro I have seen some nice big yields over the years. Strain and grower input had a lot to do with the big yields, the more you train and look after them the more they repay the favor come harvest. Cant wait to see some girls in that setup of yours though, any plans on what your going to grow in it?
I feel like a, like a slice of butter... melting on top of a big-ol' pile of flapjacks... yeah.
@bubblehok I just harvested two flo og. They are the most solid, dense buds I've grown. I have another flo og ready to move in today. I popped a girl scout cookies seed last week. She'll be next in line. We have a 5 plant limit for medical grow so I have to schedule better. Lol. I like to let them veg for a bit first.
My old setup. You can see how much height I gained with the low profile pump setup. Hey! There's my old vented HPS! They sure did a good job! My LEDs are much better.
Lol. You also get thumbnails of my cat!
