Leaf canoeing and foxtails/whispy growth
Hello guys, minor problem I’ve been having in my recent grows with multiple strains so I’d say it’s not a genetic trait. After like week4/5 of flower when my buds have pretty much developed and are just packing weight, they round of lovely at the top giving a nice golf ball like bud and start to get the odd amber hairs/stigmas. They look beautiful and then I start getting like foxtails and really thin whispy growth. You can see the stalk and it shoots like round single finger leafs almost like when I’ve reveg’d a plant/clone before.
i also get the odd leaf here and there that fold up like a canoe boat. The first time it did it the first thing I assumed was heat/light stress so made sure my 600w hps Stayed at least 20” of canopy. My temp in summer was high due to heatwave (uk) But never saw temps above 30degrees. But with my light backed to 22/24” and winter temps at 24 lights on & 20 lights of I’m still having same problem.
no drastic issue as bud quality and yield is still more than I would ever ask for but just annoys me I can’t get to the bottom of it no matter what I try.
1mx1mx1.8m tent with huge 6” fan and filter which to be fair is overkill because I run veg & flower tents piggy backed through it. So environment is good with temps like I say in good parameters 20-25. Humidity average between 50\60% normally the lower 50’s.
600w hps with dimable ballast which I have tried on 400w and still have same issue.
Canna a&b, bud candy, big bud and overdrive for flower nutes used as and when advised but at 1/3ish dose according to manufacturers. I keep ec on the low side of around 1.0/1.2ec in flow and try not rise above 1.6/18ec out flow. Hand watered in coco once a day to 5/10% run off. Ph between 5.8-6.5.
all photoperiod strains:
i know it’s an extremely long post guys ahah sorry I’ve just sat down with a J after work. But sure somebody with more experience will love to get stuck into it and point me right. Pictures attached of the leaf curls and the new growth on top. You can see the new white hairs are a different colour to the Lower growth. Thanks guys.
Foxtailing can happen for a number of reasons mate. I think this is down to the feed though.
You're feeding EC in around 1.2, but getting 1.6-1.8 on the run off? Is that right?
What exactly are you feeding them right now? Like ML per litre?
See, I would use bud candy, or big bud, not both at the same time. Wait until you see flowers from, then use big buds for about three weeks, four if its a long flowering plant.
Then, add the bud candy and drop the big bud.
Overdrive is best used when the trichomes turn 50/50 clear to cloudy. This is when it will kick start all the terpene and oil productions.
I think, because you're feeding Big bud and bud candy together, the plant is getting too much of something, and it causes a lock out. Then when you change to overdrive, the excess will stop, the lockout will go away, and the plant will start eating properly again.
This is why you have the white hairs and foxtails coming i think.
When i used Advanced nuits, I never used bud candy, i find it taints the final flavour if the bud. Adds a certain sweetness that you can tell is bud candy, ( a friend used to use it ).
Heard you say you was using organic bottle nutes
it was ok, but now i use the canna ange with some extras.
I used to use advanced, sensi a n b, with big bud, and overdrive, with some buddhas tree solar green, and fruit burst. made lovely buds
But i found canna is cheaper, much cheaper, and you get the same results.
All i use now is canna a n b, with some rhizo. Ill use pk13.14 throughout flower. some vitalink calmag, and some buddhas tree solar green. That's about it.
I find using the same range makes shit easy, but there are some products that are too good to not use lol
big bud is one i miss tbf, and might bring it back for the jacks. maybe some of that fruit burst too hmmmmm lol.
Many options mate, experiment, have fun with it, find out what works well for you
