Given this a lot of thought over the last few weeks.

What to make the perfect soil mix for less than £6 for a 20ltr pot (veg till harvest)

Just going to give it my best shoot

But It's got to be high quality, went too cheap last time.

This would last years (perpetual grow)
And cost Less than £50 (dry food)
and would do more than 50 x 20ltr pots

Chicken manure        10kg
Blood, bone and fish 1kg
Bone meal                   1kg
Seaweed meal            3.5kg
Magnesium                 1.kg
Garden lime                 1.kg

Perlite on line can cost as little as 100ltrs for £20

Sharp sand is very cheap bag could last a year, top dress to reduce chance of bugs

Grow-sure soil seedling and cutting is top quality soil £4.00 (10ltr)

Mix in 2ltr of perlite and dry food( working the amounts out based on the advice on the box) 3 different mixes for veg, flower and top dress (3 weeks in flower)

Use cheap soil or reused old soil to top the pot up( soil drys out quick and uneven don't really want roots here)

Any idea's or suggestions are welcome.

Going more into to depth about the soil and dry food and how they all play there parts

Some of the plant food over laps each other but the hope is using different plant foods will mean the roots have access to all the food they need at different stages in veg and flower.

Gro-Sure Seed & Cutting Compost

Improves germination by 25% for the best start

  • Super fine grade

  • Added Fine Grade Vermiculite which improves drainage and aeration

  • Seaweed & nutrients for healthy growth

  • Gro-Sure Seed & Cutting Compost contains sufficient nutrients for the seedlings to grow

So you can keep to the same Compost from clones/seeds to harvest

There no lumps in the soil, its light and drains well and you know what's in the soil from the start.

Sharp sand

1” of Sharp sand to cover the soil should reduce the chances of getting some insects in the flower room

Perlite

2ltrs of perlite mixed in the soil will make the soil very light and help to grow thick heathy roots.

Westland Seaweed enhanced 3.6 - 4.8 -1.4 and trace elements

Seaweed contains many beneficial trace elements, natural hormones and proteins for boosting plant and soil health.

This enhanced Seaweed is enriched with organic plant food and natural minerals to boost nutrient levels and stimulate better all-round plant growth. The high phosphorus content ensures that plant roots are vigorous and healthy and can take full advantage of all the benefits that seaweed provides.

Apply 90g/m2 more often used as top-dressing.

Magnesium Salts NPK 7-3-5 with trace elements

  • Fast acting granules which help to produce green, healthy leaves and encourages abundant fruit and vegetables

  • Contains 50% more magnesium that epsom salts with a longer lasting action

  • Works for several weeks and helps prevent and corrects browning of conifers

Miracle-Gro Magnesium Salts Natural Source of Epsom Salts are a natural source of Epsom salts suitable for oranic gardening. It prevents and corrects leaf yellowing, improves nutrient absorption

into plants and produces lush, green, vibrant foliage. It is ideal for magnesium hungry crops such as potatoes, roses, tomatoes and pears.

35g per m2 often used to top dress

Westland Bone Meal NPK 3-9-0

Bone Meal is a naturally-sourced feed where nutrients are taken up efficiently due to longer periods of release in the soil. It has Nitrogen to support green growth, Calcium to keep your plant both healthy and strong and Phosphorus for your roots to grow bigger and stronger.

Bone Meal is perfect for maintaining trees and shrubs, but is also great for hedges and even root vegetables.

  • Easy to use

  • Ideal for trees & shrubs

  • Promotes strong & healthy rooting

  • Greener, healthier foliage

Apply 135g/m2

Westland Fish, Blood and Bone NPK 3-9-3

Fish, Blood and Bone is a good natural source of all three of the major nutrients. Nutrients are taken up efficiently due to longer period of release in the soil. Being especially high in phosphorus makes it particularly good for stimulating strong, healthy root growth.

  • Encourages strong, healthy root growth

  • Provides rapid and long lasting organic growth

  • Balanced nutrients

  • Builds soil fertility

Apply 70g m2 as a top dressing

Westland Organic Chicken Manure NPK 4.5-3.5-2.5 + trace elements

There ideal for improving soil and the planting, as well as feeding of established plants. Chicken Manure is an effective non-chemical fertiliser and is a useful source of nitrogen. Nitrogen is the main nutrient plants require for healthy green and also leafy root growth.

  • Rich in organic matter

  • Breaks down slowly into the soil releasing their nutrients

  • Releases nutrients slowly

  • Feeds for 3 months

Apply 100 -300g per m2

Westland Garden Lime

I think a PH level under 6.5 starts to dissolve lime and this slowly increases the ph level over time

Westland Garden Lime makes soils less acidic, enabling plants to take up the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. If soils become too acidic nutrients get locked away, plants can suffer deficiencies and feeding becomes less effective. Garden Lime is also a valuable source of calcium.

A ready to use granule that breaks down acid soils improving availability of nutrients. It is also a great source of calcium and magnesium encouraging strong leaf growth, fruit quality and disease resistance.

  • Use garden lime to bring the soil in your garden to a more optimum pH level improving soil structure and plant root efficiency

  • This ready to use product provides an immediate change to the pH level of your soil once worked in

  • This product can be used all year round to provide soil with calcium to keep plants healthy and strong and magnesium to encourage strong and vibrant leaves

Apply 15g per m2.

flower mix one week before turning them over to flower

empty one bag of soil in a 20ltr pot, add the 2ltrs of perlite and mix and add the dry food and mix

seaweed     20g

magnesium  8g

bonemeal    20g

chicken        40g

garden lime  8g

fish,blood and bone 20g

Top fill the pot with old soil and add some sand.

This would result in a much cooler soil mix (than my last grow) and I would top dress each pot, 3 weeks in flower with

seaweed      20g

garden lime  4g

fish,blood and bone 20g

Hey Jack, Sounds like you put a lot of effort in keeping your costs down.. fair play to you bro

I also grow in 20L pots currently so am interested to see how your mix works. I currently use a mix of organic based feeds including some dry amendments and liquid feeds.

good luck with your grow

Time to pop some more beans 😗

Thanks @chillbert,

I have 5 purple punch seedlings under a t5 Smile

Chopping my plants in the next few days( just over 7 weeks in flower), been unlucky as I can see the odd seed so chopping a week early.

I used this soil mix in large buckets (about 16ltr)

chicken manure 80g

Seaweed Enhanced 60g

garden lime 100g

fish blood and bone 70g

In a low quality soil with feed upto 6 weeks,

Its worked out OK and the plants have done really well but they got a little burnt at the start and dry food lasted up till week 6 in flower and the fan leaves stared to go yellow.

Its not bad but I think I can do much better next time.

@jacks_farm sounds like you had a decent result last time around.. fading after week 6 is not so bad.. If you got some seeds, it could be genetic instability (seeds not inbred enough times to eradicate such traits) or some stress during grow.. a few isn’t an issue and some strains can be prone to producing tiny amounts of ‘female’ pollen which self pollinate to create a few seeds

Enjoy your harvest dude

Thanks mate,

Plants in low nutrient soil that drains easy, will direct more energy to grow roots in search of water and food.

Clones and seedling 🌱  should start off with some very low nutrients soil and when you pot them up into a larger pot they will need a little more food, been thinking about it and 1 tsp of seaweed meal in a 1ltr pot of soil ( same soil) and a pinch of garden lime should keep them happy for a week or two.

The next time I pot up (20ltr),

I will have to give them a lot of nutrient a week before flower, they will need loads of nutrients over the next 5 weeks, for plant growth(strech and bud development)

Last time I should have top dressed the soil 3 weeks in flower and this would have kept the plants happy till harvest
