More growers here at Percys have started running organic soil, Super soil or living soil lately, my self included. Lately i have seen and been asked questions pertaining to companion plants and other organic methods.
Ive have been asked to make a post about companion planting so we can all share this info.
Companion planting is a great way to naturally benefit your plants, By planting flowers, herbs and other plants alongside your cannabis, Our plants may benefit from natural pest control ( also good for non soil growers) and enhanced soil health.
SO here is a list of some of the plants and the benefits they can bring to our garden. Some are more suited to our vegetable garden but are included in the list anyways.
(This information has been collected from searching many sites around the internet.) So if you know of others I have not included please add it to the post.
Pest Control
Basil- Repels aphids and spider mites, The strong scent can also repels flies that lay eggs in the soil or underneath your leaves. basil may also aid in increasing cannabis oil production, but this has not been verified.
Bay leaf- repel flies, cockroaches, and ants.
Chives- deters Japanese beetles, carrot flies, aphids, mites, and even rabbits.
Chrysanthemums- contain pyrethrum a common insect repellents, deter insects like spider mites, silverfish, Japanese beetles, ants, bed bugs, roaches, and fleas.
Dill- attracts predatory insects like, ladybugs, mantises, and wasps. Dill is also great for bees and butterflies.
Garlic- The scent of garlic is mostly contained beneath the soil, deterring maggots and other insects that attack your cannabis root systems. Garlic also inhibits fungal growth and will affect mycorrhizal fungus in your soil.
Geraniums- deter mosquitoes and leafhoppers.
Lavender- repels Mice, fleas, ticks, and moths.
Lemongrass- contains fragrant citronella oil that repels mosquitos.
Lemon thyme- repels mosquitoes.
Mint- Many pests avoid the aroma of mint. The smell of the mint can also help disquise the aroma from your cannabis plants. Mint grows aggressively so will need to be kept in check.
its best to be placed in its own container and placed amongst the plants.
Parsley- is an effective repellent against asparagus beetles.
Sage- attracts predatory insects, repels carrot rust flies, cabbage moths, cabbage loopers, cabbage maggots, cabbage worms, and black flea beetles.
Thyme- Repel insects like cabbage loopers, whiteflies, tomato hornworms, and corn earworms.
Trap plants: ( Plants that attract pests)
Yarrow and sunflower- do a good job attracting ladybirds as well as beneficial mites and insects which eat fungus gnats, scales, and spider mites.
Marigolds- Will repel Aphids but also attract many of the pest we wish not to have. They are best used to attract the pest to them instead of our plants and placed away from our plants.
Nasturtiums- are known as a "trap crop" because instead of repelling pests, they attract them to their own leaves.
Companion Plants for Soil Enrichment: (cover crops)
Alfalfa- absorbs nitrogen from the air and stores it in their roots.should be mulched up and stirred into the soil to release stored nitrogen for the next plant to feed on.
Chamomile- help prevent molds and mildews from getting established and contaminating your crop. it can be chopped and dropped as a mulch to release potassium and calcium into the soil.
Borage- absorbs trace nutrients that other plants may not be able to uptake. like potassium and calcium. Should be chopped and mulched into the soil for other plants to more easily absorb.
Comfrey- accumulate a lot of nutrients, The leaves of Comfrey are so fertile that they get compared to manure.
Legumes- (beans, peas, and lentils) absorb nitrogen from the air and convert it into usable food for the plant.
Red Clover- nitrogen-fixing legume plant used as a living mulch to help soil retain moisture, its roots help aireate soil and attract beneficial insects.
Field Peas- nitrogen fixing plant, which adds fertility to the soil.
Fava Beans- nitrogen fixing and help keep soil life alive.
Clover- Draws nitrogen into the soil also aerates the soil to improve water drainage.
Increased oil production:
Chamomile Stinging nettle Yarrow Basil
Mask the smell: plants that contain oils powerful enough to help cover the smell of cannabis. (Not a replacement for your carbon filter)
Mint Rosemary Lavender Basil Jasmine Lilac Thyme
Sativa to change the things I can, Indica to accept the things I can’t.
@twisted1 nice work mate if I’d have know you where doing the hard work I wouldn’t have bothered doing it myself last week👍 Just one thing about the marigolds there are 2 main types French and African yes they attract hover flies and there larvae eat the aphids. But the French ones will repel white fly and they both help combat bad soil nematodes.✌️

@twisted1 Shouldn’t be mate they do a good job, just been and picked up some marigold seeds yesterday 👍

comfrey grown in builders bag to stop roots spreading.
this variety is called Bokking 14 which has been bred to not produce annual seed so it’s spread can be easily controlled (can only propagate it from the roots)
Used for home brewing plant available NPK ( its npk is typically higher than manure as mentioned above! )
Basic recipe:
Chop as much leaves and stalks as you can fit into a bucket.
Stuff the mix into a bag big enough with small holes in bottom. Seal top of bag to stop comfrey coming out.
Place in the bucket and fill with water allowing the water to soak into the bag.
Place a lid on top to prevent washout and place somewhere the smell won’t matter (it will stink lol)
leave for a couple of weeks then ready to use at a tablespoon a gallon approx for an organic plant available npk general feed.
Renewable fertilizer, very nice brother. The invasive species is a bit of concern but with no seeds that’s much easier to control. I’ll keep this trick around, never know what you might need in the future.
Random acts of kindness make the world a better place
@chillbert nice tip mate, you can get it on eBay pretty cheap, the roots I mean 👍

What a beautiful comfrey plant. We had one at our old place. Planted it before knowing the roots go deeper then some trees lmao
Was the same strain as yours too. I would love to find a clone near me but they are hard to find . Great call with growing it in a bag like that. Best plant for the garden
