Just wanted to know if the temp of the compost going into the tea matters? We had a bit of a cold spell this week and my compost pile got cold and covered in snow. The middle of the pile is about 17c  and dropping everyday wanted to know if it was worth it to use my compost or should I buy some from the store.

If your compost is finished it should be fine. I filled a 5 gallon bucket (with some small holes drilled in it) with sifted compost and brought that inside to use for tea over the winter. But even if your pile freezes there will still be plenty of life in the middle of the pile.

Hey man, you got a joint? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

@highguygardener ya I was worried about there not being enough microbes in the compost with it being so cold. I did bring a bucket in yesterday and is up to about room temp now and gana give it a try. Thanks

@backblast a lot of the microbes go dormant instead of dying off in the cold. Also in my experience the middle of the pile produces enough heat to prevent it from freezing over. But I live in PA it gets cold but not like western new York or Canada. But I would imagine your local microbes are suited to withstand your winters

@highguygardener I hear ya I’m in Central New York right in the snow belt gets snowy as hell about an avg. of 110-115 inches a year. I usually cover my pile but didn’t have the chance with that storm that rolled through here the other day.
