Aswell as my love for growing, i also got a love for wood and wood grain. These are my lathe made pipes, wooden version of a chillum really. There made out of maple, cherry and pear. Got love for the pear as it came out of my nanas garden. Only issue I ever have is drilling straight, especially on the long ones.
Can you guess which one I love the most?
Hope you guys like.
Happy smokes!!

Drilling a pipe straight can be challenging. I used to make those on the lathe and the easiest way to drill straight was to use the lathe and put the bit in a tailstock chuck. Start the lathe and advance the tailstock to drill the hole. You can’t go all the way unless you’ve left a little bit of cutoff stock near the spur center so planning is important. My current alternative is using a vertical mill and a jig to hold the pipe straight but not everyone has access to machine tools.
As far as your favorite, I’d guess the Cherry because of the luster or maybe the pear because of the memories.

@monkeydo that is a good idea, also I think the issue aswell is my drills are long and thin so they can easily divert in the wood, I've lost many nice pipes due to blow-out out the side.
If your thinking the darkest one you would be correct, it is pear and the colour is basically all the tar that's absorbed. I sand to 1200 grit, but won't add oil.

@monkeydo support rollers would compliment the tail stock drill also, don't you think, assuming you have a concentric OD somewhere close to the mount piece.
I’m into metal (not just music ), residual stresses are easier to predict than how the wood grain is going to fuck with you! LOL.
Honor is simply the morality of superior men.
Lathe drilling is the way to go, if you can set-up a siding sled with stops and what not. Had to make large interior window shutter with a propeller slats, a LOT of them, this is the technique I used. Figured you were doing the same @Monkeydo. 👍 Then finding extra long drill bits is the next challenge. lol
@woodi2 and keeping those extra long bits straight is also a challenge over time. Bent long ones get cut to make straight shorter ones in my shop. Up to 9 inches are fairly easy to source and that’s plenty long enough for pipe making. I used to do a lot of lathe drilling, then I got a mill and that was easier in most cases.

What would you recommend as a good drill bit? I do drill my holes to 2mm, so I find the drill bit is so bendy that when I apply pressure it finds the easiest way to get through no matter how straight pipe and drill are. Any advice? Can you get hardened long drill bits that are 2mm?

@mcgrower 2mm is pretty small and flexible but if you switch to a pure tungsten carbide bit it won't flex like the hss bits do. They are more expensive but worth the price in my opinion. Tungsten bits I've bought over the years are still as sharp as they were when new and still cut beautifully even after many thousands of holes drilled. The downside is they are brittle and can break if dropped on a hard floor and hit the wrong way. They don't like to flex at all.

@mcgrower not particularly. I do a lot of high precision drilling but those hole’s aren’t more than a couple of centimeters deep and on those I use some custom stuff. You are looking for solid tungsten carbide bits, not the coated ones. In the US that 2mm jobber length (standard size) tungsten carbide bit would run about £6. Just remember that bits that don’t bend break instead of bending so be careful. I’ve broken my share of these over the years.
