Hello!!  Soup here.

I am currently grinding up egg shells.

My question is  "can I add this straight to my soil mix or do I need to put it in the oven, to bake so to speak"?

As far as I know, baking it just helps it break down faster.   The only use I have made of this so far is baking crushed egg shells and soaking in vinegar to extract calcium.  Easy DIY calcium supplement.    But I think you are getting the same benefit without baking them, just takes longer.   PSI- Baking egg shells makes your house smell absolutely  terrible for a few days...  😄

Hope this helped!  And good luck

@satans-soup-soils

hi bro

@shonuff is spot on

the way he does it makes the C become immediately plant available so the plant can use it straight away

by adding to soil crushed up it will takes the microbes several weeks and /or months to achieve this... the smaller its ground up the quicker it will break down

ive heard it advised to also remove the inner skin of the shell which can be done through charring / baking and using a breeze to blow any non-shell bits off (this is to avoid contamination/ future undesirable microbes in it? and fpor longer safer storage)

This would be a good thing to ask @Chris Trump when he comes on for interview later this month !

nice to see you guys looking to use natural inputs Smile /p>

awesome stuff guys Thumbs Up

Time to pop some more beans 😗

Heyo @satans-soup-soils, as you can see the shells change after heating. I use our wood stove and yes they stink. 🤮

Element 100 g chopped shell (fresh) In 100 g (after calcination)
Calcium carbonate 35 g 30 g
Iron Up to 4.2 g Up to 2.5 g
Zinc Up to 650 mg Up to 3.3 g
Magnesium 410 mg 1050 mg
Sulfur Up to 1300 Up to 1 g
Phosphorus Up to 170 mg Up to 12 g
Manganese Up to 120 mg 420 mg
Sodium Up to 130 mg 650 mg
Potassium 85 mg 20 mg

Source: Natural  Center for Biotechnology Information

Besides the above elements Molybdenum, iodine, cobalt, chromium, and fluorine are also present.  But after heating these elements decay.

The film covering the eggshell from the inside is 3-4% of the organic matter.  The membrane is rich mainly in keratin and mucin.

We just smiled n waved sittn there on that sack o seeds

Don't know if this helps but I found that If I kept a oven dish on the very bottom of my oven I could just put my used egg shells in there and over the course of the week if I left them there they would get cooked when I make dinner etc so you don't have to even bother wasting energy or time to dry them out if thats what you want to do.

Like @shonuff said I would then just grind these up and add them to organic apple cider vinegar (referred to as WCA in Jadam/KNF). You don't need too many egg shells so only fill about 1:10 ratio of shells to vinegar (don't put a lid on tightly or it will blow). Once the bubbles completely stop strain through a cloth of coffee filter and you're off. It's also a good for foliar. The dilution ratio for soil drench or foliar is around 1:500 - 1:1000.

If you want to find a use for them in the normal garden slugs hate crushed egg shells so you can put them around the bases of your plants to prevent slugs.
