So whilst deep in one of those youtube rabbit holes I found myself watching a mealworm farming video when a lightbulb went on in my head - I could make my own ecothrive charge, commonly known as frass.

So here I'm going to record my trials and tribulations in my attempt to farm insects for frass in a home environment.

So first and foremost, the stars of the show... the worms!

image

so there are a few farming options here depending on your circumstances - for example if you have insectivore livestock or pets then a good option would be mealworms - they have a fast lifecycle giving a bunch of continuous yummy food for birds, reptiles and other insect-loving animals as well as the all important frass!

However I went down the route of the moiroworm (also known as superworms across the pond) mainly because I don't have insectivore pets or livestock.. for now!

They are in many ways similiar to mealworms but all the things that make them not as good as mealworms for feed, makes them ideal for my purposes - namely, they have a long lifecycle (especially in larvae form) and they need to be separated from the herd and isolated in order to pupate - meaning easier population control. These two factors together means you have more frass from the same colony for longer which is handy if you don't have a bettle larvae disposable service (i.e. chickens) available.

I found moiroworms in 40g pots at Pets@home for a paltry £2.75, you can find them in the live feed section with the reptile stuff, or elsewhere in the interwebs. Mealworms go for about the same.

The environment:

I got a little desk organizer from The Range for £3.99 just to get things started and it is tiny so can be kept anywhere really:

image

I am preparing a larger 3-drawer housing unit with the top and middle drawer containing mesh floor which will serve to self sift the colony. This will (hopefully) mean that mature beetles on the top drawer will lay eggs which fall through the mesh into the middle drawer where they hatch into superworms and eat their way around the grains - the movement will make the frass fall through the mesh into the bottom container which is then harvested - I will post a how to once I have all the bits.

The food:

In the wild, beetle larvae eat pretty much the same as the beetles themselves - so fresh and decaying plant matter, other insects, animal waste but they do love them some grains - this makes them great composters for garden waste, excellent companion to my worms.

I am feeding them these waitrose oats with added wheat bran which cost me £1.20 - in good old waitrose fashion it is quite expensive and you can get just plain old oats much cheaper elsewhere (only got these because I'm an impatient fucker and the pet shop is next door :D). The wringly ones also need a source of water, this is best done with scraps of vegetables that are slow to go moldy - apples, carrots, brocolli, banana skins etc are all excellent for this.

image

The method:

So for the method, once you have your materials and worms, add some oats to one of the drawers, your veggie scraps and then put your worms in their new home and that's it! let them do their thing.

Be vigilant as some can be real escape artists and you may need to plug some gaps - I actually hotglued the handles to close up the little holes as I could see creepy crawly heads trying to get through it as well as a bit of a drawer coverout of cardboard as they were trying to get up and over the drawer but the large majority was so hungry they just burrowed in and started eating.

I'll add further steps as I get to 'em such as harvesting the frass, separating the moiroworms to pupate, the beetle stage, etc.

I'll also update this thread once I make the bigger housing unit and I will probably end up modifying the small one for mealworms just for kicks.

Sounds like an ace Idea!

Just curious as its a smaller scale than a worm farm could you setup two different frass farms and feed them different diets so you could make a more tailored topdress for veg/flower?

@macky Thanks!

So frass is the waste of beetle larvae (mealworms, moiroworms and the like) much the same way as with worm castings - the big bonus of frass is the content of chitin in it - this activates the plants imune system as well as ward off some pests. I'll add a post about the benefits and nutrition of frass for info.

Guys, it's not that expensive !

You really want a colony of maggots and worms in your house? You really want to feed them and collect the stinky shite? Are you on the wacky baccy or something?

I'm sticking to a sealable 5ltr tub (with measuring spoon) that comes via evil Amazon Prime
