Hello everyone.  I am in the late flowering stage with my current grow and am thinking of my next run. I have been working on getting my organic living soil blend right. I plan to keep using my soil and re-amending it. I would like to know the pros and cons to both Vermiculite and Perlite. Should I use both?

Vermiculite holds more water so better for moisture retention and is Neutral Ph

Perlite is better for Aeration & drainage as its less compressible, can be slightly alkaline

Only real differences Smile

I’ve used both together before with out any noticeable problems because of the different properties ZN has listed above. Perlite tends to easily make its way to the top of the pot and by the end of a grow it’s all sat on the top. Other good  alternatives are pumice (won’t float)and rice hulls(break down and add organic matter to your soil).

If your plan is for one year, plant rice
If your plan is for ten years, plant trees.
If your plan is for one hundred years, educate children.

@moist_saltine Avoid inhaling the dust from either, but vermiculite has an added danger, it could have trace elements of asbestos.

From US EPA website:

To further reduce the risk associated with the occasional use of vermiculite products during gardening activities, EPA recommends that consumers:

  • Use vermiculite outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid creating dust by keeping vermiculite damp during use.
  • Avoid bringing dust into the home on clothing.
