Hello all,

I’m planning on growing a selection of Autoflowers for my next run, and I’ve read that it’s a good idea to give them longer periods of light in their first few weeks so as to maximise their growth during their short veg cycle.

Looking at getting a grow light to start them off indoors before they go outside. It doesn’t need to be very big as I’ll only be germinating one seed at a time.

So far I’m looking at an ‘Evolux Pro 6400k T5 Single Tube Lamp’ for £20, but would love to hear from peeps about whether that one will do the job or whether there’s a better option.

Thanks!

P.s not looking to spend a lot

@gggrowboy

using a single t5 tube is a great way to start off the seedling for the first 2 weeks.

If I have seedling to deal with and no space in a tent, I use two 2700k cfl lamps about 3cm from the leaves. It works great and the seedling love the gentle light too. You will have to rig up a fixture tho as I’ve not seen any commercial cfl lights around.

Thanks all!

Good to know that the T5 will do the job as £20 seems very reasonable. Will also check out the CFL option 🙂👍🏼

Planning ahead for next spring and starting to pick up bits of kit now.

Couple of follow-on questions:

When are seedlings usually strong enough to cope with direct sunlight?

And should this be done incrementally?

Never grown weed outside but I would think if the day/night temps are good you could start the seeds outside.

starting seeds off in a cup of lukewarm water over 24 to 48 hours is a good start ( wait till the seeds drop)

Then put them between 2 sheet of kitchen roll, soak the sheet (drain off any run off) put the in a zip seal sandwich bag and check on them every day ( keep the bag in a dark warm space)

when you see a 2" root, slide them into some soil ( use seedling soil) to give them the best start

the real advantage of keeping them under t5's is to give them a good start away from bugs, wind and cold nights

If you are moving the seedlings from T5 or cfl into the sun you should take it in gradual steps to avoid sunburning the plants. T5 lights are a lot less intense than the sun so those leaves aren’t used to the high energy sunlight. Apparently from what we’ve seen this year, if you are moving from high intensity grow lights, either led or hid, to outdoors you are probably good. I didn’t hear of any problems with that this season.
