I came across a comment on another forum which stated

it's generally been agreed that dechlorination of water is completely unnecessary and in some cases detrimental

So I get googling and read some interesting science stuff, concerning all plants and crops not just weed. It's generally correct, at levels in tap water it's fine to not bother using any neutraliser.

side by side tests looking at microbial activity, there is negligible difference.

Discuss!

completely unnecessary

That's a strong term 😉 Nothing is ever that black and white 😉 For hydro n shit not needed, but for living soil, its it prefered because you don't want to kill any of the microbes.

The plants will use chlorine in small amounts, but I wouldn't go using swimming pool water on them 😉 Some water has low levels of it, some are ridiculously high. It mostly depends on what medium you're growing in, and how much chlorine is in the water.

Chlorine will dissipate but chloramine will not and could build up in medium thus adversely affecting the micro life/plants over time. Hence the need for a filter or neutraliser.

Plus the article does not take into account differing levers of chlorine and chloramine based in different locations or water suppliers.

I never grow a plant, it grows me.

I read a few different articles and studies. It was based on max levels recomended by WHO mostly.

I know what you're saying is repeated ad infinitum on weed forums everywhere, but it is rarely back up by proper science.

Lots of bro science though Grinning

Chlorine in the form of Sodium Chlorite can be used safely at 5ppm to kill root rot in hydro/dwc. This is swimming pool strength. It will not harm the plant at this strength but it will kill all microbes in the medium. If I were growing in living or super soil I would de-chlorinate my water as much as possible to help microbes. They are feeding your plants not the soil is my understanding.
