Welcome to our guide on how to make FECO oil. In this guide, we will explain what FECO is, and how you can make it yourself. The process is reasonably easy, and it does not take very long. You can use leftover trim, or the main colas from your cannabis plants, it is up to you. By the end of this guide, you will be able to make your own homemade FECO oil.
FECO is just one of many different types of cannabis extracts you can make from your harvest. Some cannabis extracts are great for recreational use, and some are better for medicinal uses. Usually, FECO is a cannabis extract that is used for medicine.
So to begin, we will explain what FECO is, and how it differs from other cannabis extracts.
What is FECO Cannabis Oil
The word FECO, is an acronym that stands for “Full Extract Cannabis Oil”. It is a thick brown substance that looks similar to black strap molasses. You may have seen FECO in a syringe like in this picture.
FECO is often used as a medicine to treat a wide range of health issues. From epilepsy, Parkinson, and chronic pain. Full extract cannabis oil has shown great results when used as a medicine and it has grown massively in popularity over the last few years.
The cannabinoid content of the FECO will differ, depending on what type of cannabis was used to make it.
Does FECO Oil contain THC?
The amount of THC in FECO oil will differ depending on what type of cannabis was used to make it. Some strains of cannabis will produce mostly THC. Others will produce mostly CBD. There are also some that will produce an even amount of both.
If you get your FECO oil from a dispensary or pharmacy, the amount of THC or CBD will be clearly displayed on the bottle. If you’re making FECO at home, then check the strain info of your plant from the seedbank you bought it from.
Does FECO Oil Make You High?
If you use FECO oil that is high in THC, then it will get you high. This can be uncomfortable to new users, so you must take it slowly. Start with a small dose and work your way up. You will build up a tolerance over time and you can take higher doses without feeling so “high”.
This can become a problem for some users. As your tolerance level increases, you will need to use a FECO oil that has more THC in it to feel the effects. Cannabis medicine is not cheap, the prices can easily get out of hand.
How Much Does FECO Oil Cost?
No matter where you are based in the world, cannabis medicine is expensive. Prices for one gram of FECO oil can range $100 USD to $250 and even more! In countries where it is legal to use as medicine, the cost may be covered by insurance or national health services. But this is rare.
In most cases, people who use FECO for medicine, have to pay for it themselves. This can cost a patient thousands a month! The sad thing is, most people using FECO are unable to work, and can not afford the price of the medicine they need.
Some are able to grow their own cannabis. But again, due to health reasons or legal issues, many can not even do that. For those who do grow their own cannabis, they may do so to make the FECO oil themselves.
How to Make Feco Oil
Making FECO is very similar to making Rick Simpson Oil. The only difference is instead of using Isopropyl alcohol, FECO is made using grain alcohol or ethanol. Lets begin with a list of items you will need to make your FECO.
List of Things for Making FECO
The whole idea of this process is to dissolve the cannabinoids, resins and terpenes into grain alcohol. You will then evaporate the alcohol, leaving a thick brown sticky substance behind. This is your FECO.
You will need cannabis, some grain alcohol, and some glass jars. You will also need some coffee filters, or a cheese cloth to squeeze the alcohol out of the cannabis after it has been soaked.
To evaporate the alcohol, you can leave the mix at room temperature. But it will take a long time for it to evaporate. To speed up the process, a rice cooker can be used. You must not use a heater with an open flame!! We will go into this later.
After you have everything you need, you can begin making your FECO oil.
Making FECO Oil
Before you begin, prepare!! Make sure you have all of the equipment you need. Clean all surfaces and any tools you will use. The process is done in two stages, and can be done over a couple of days.
Step One, Decarboxylation
Decarboxylation is a process that converts THCA into THC. THCA is non psychoactive, and it will not get you high. For it to become psychoactive it needs to be decarboxylated (decarbed) to become THC.
This happens when cannabis is heated. When you smoke cannabis, it is decarbed as it burns. If cannabis is not going to be smoked, it should be decarboxylated first to ensure you get the desired effects.
Here is a guide on how to decarboxylate cannabis for edibles and oils. This especially needs to be done if you’re not using a rice cooker to evaporate the alcohol.
Step Two, Soaking the Cannabis
Here, we want to dissolve all of the trichomes on your buds and leaves, into the grain alcohol. Doing this is simple. Fill a jar with your cannabis until it is about 2/3rds full. It is a good idea to break the cannabis up into small pieces (but don’t grind it). This will allow the alcohol to get to the trichomes easier.
Next, take the grain alcohol and pour it into the jar until the cannabis is completely submerged. Put the lid on the jar, and shake it. Make sure everything is mixed up well and all of the cannabis is covered. Then you just have to wait.
Step Three, Wait
Store the jars in a dark cool place. They should be left there for at least 24 hours. It will take time for the alcohol to dissolve all of the terpenes cannabinoids and resins in the cannabis.
Shake the jars occasionally to help dissolve the trichomes. You will start to see the alcohol change colour, from clear, to green and then brown
After 24 hours, enough of the trichomes should be dissolved into the alcohol. You can wait longer if you wish, but you can move onto the next step when ever you are ready.
Step Four, Filtering the Alcohol
The plan now is to remove all of the big bits of cannabis from the alcohol. To do this, you should use coffee filters, or a cheese cloth.
Place the cheesecloth or filter into a funnel or sieve that is sitting in a jar or jug. Tip the contents of the jar into the filter and wait for the alcohol to drip through. When the dripping has stopped, you can press down on the cannabis a little to squeeze more alcohol out. But be careful not to rip the filter.
After all of the alcohol has been filtered, you can throw the cannabis away. All of the cannabinoids should be dissolved into the alcohol by now. So the next step is to evaporate the alcohol to leave behind the pure cannabinoids.
Step Five, Evaporating the Alcohol
*CAUTION* High percentage alcohol is very flammable. You must not use a naked flame during this process! You should be in a well ventilated area, and you should not smoke!
Safety is the number one priority! You can always leave the container open and the alcohol will evaporate at room temperature over time. This is a much safer option. Alternatively, you can speed up the process by using a rice cooker.
A rice cooker is ideal as it will heat the mixture without using a flame. You can also adjust the heat setting.
Simply pour the alcohol mix into the rice cooker, turn the heat on low and stir occasionally. It will take a while for all of the alcohol to evaporate.
Make sure you are in a well ventilated area! The fumes from the alcohol can be very overpowering in confined spaces. Open all windows and doors, do not use any naked flames, and be extra cautious during this stage.
Eventually, the alcohol will evaporate, and you will be left with a dark brown sticky substance. This is your FECO oil, now you just have to collect it and store it.
Step Six, Collecting your FECO
The best way to collect FECO oil from your rice cooker is by using a syringe.
The oil is very thick. It is easier to pull into a syringe when it is warm. So try to do it before the FECO is cooled down.
Alternatively, you can also use a spoon to scoop it into any container you need to.
You should store your FECO in a dark cool place, in an airtight container. It is a great idea to store it in individual syringes. It will make dosing and storage much easier.
How to Consume FECO Oil
FECO oil can be used in many ways. From a grain of rice sized drop under the tongue, to being smoked in a dabbing rig. You can add to food and drink, and even make your own gummies and edibles.
You must bear in mind that FECO is essentially pure cannabinoids. It can be very strong! If you are new to cannabis, or do not use a large amount, then be careful with the dosage. Take a small amount and increase the dosage slowly over time. Especially if your FECO has a high percentage of THC.
In many cases, FECO is used as a medicine. It has shown to help massively with childhood epilepsy, the tremors caused by Parkinson’s, and even help overcome the effects of chemotherapy. But if you do intend to use FECO as medicine, you should consult your doctor first! You never know if using cannabis will affect any medicines you are already taking.
I want to stress one more time, be very careful during the evaporation stage. NO NAKED FLAMES, make sure the room is well ventilated and if possible do it outside.
