What is Rick Simpson Cannabis Oil?

RSO is short for Rick Simpson Oil. Rick Simpson is the creator of this method of cannabis oil production. Rso, is made from the extracts of cannabis plant flowers.

The Cannabinoids are dissolved using isopropyl alcohol. Because the isopropyl alcohol only dissolves the cannabinoids, and not the plant matter, you can extract essentially, pure cannabinoids.

The alcohol is then filtered to remove large bits. Then you slowly heat up the alcohol until it is all evaporated. This leaves just the cannabinoids behind, and that is what we call Rick Simpson Oil.

  • 8oz of buds and tip leaf, with
  • 4L of Isopropyl alcohol.

The amount of oil you will need will depend on your dosage, and what you’re treating. For the correct dosing of cannabis oil medicines, you can ask for help in our cannabis growers forum

Step 1: Freeze your Buds

As isopropyl alcohol will not freeze until temps below −89 °C (−128 °F), it can be stored in a freezer at home. Along with your buds, put the Isopropyl alcohol into your freezer. This will make the trichomes brittle, and they will break off, and dissolve easily when you come to make your oil.

Step 2: Place Buds into Isopropyl

Once 24 hours has passed place your buds into a bucket. Break down the buds to smaller pieces to ensure the Isopropyl can get to more trichomes inside of them. The finer the better. You will filter this later so all the plant matter will be removed.

Place buds into Bucket over cover with Isopropyl Alcohol

When buds are sufficiently broken down, take 2L of the isopropyl alcohol out of the freezer. Now, pour it all over the buds, in the bucket. Leave the other half, you will use that soon.

Let this mix stand for around ten minutes. Stir constantly to dissolve as much of the cannabinoids as possible.

Step 3: Filter Out Plant Matter

Once stood, and the majority of the cannabinoids have dissolved, you have to removed the large pieces of plant matter.

Do this by fixing some cheese cloth over the top of a bowl. Then, slowly pour the mix onto the cheese cloth. The Isopropyl alcohol will run though, and be left in the bowl. All large piece of plant matter left on the cheese cloth.

Coffee filters can also be used in this part of the processes. But of course, you will have to use something smaller than a bowl to catch the solution after filtering.

To ensure you are extracting as much oil as possible, repeat step 2, and 3, one more time. Use the remaining 2 litres of isopropyl, and the remaining plant matter from your first rinse. Try to extract out as much as possible to increase your final yield.

Step 4: Heat The Isopropyl

This part can be dangerous!! Please be very careful! Do this part in A WELL VENTILATED AREA, AWAY FROM FLAMES AND SPARKS!!! It will explode if exposed to naked flames, don’t be the next news story in your area!

Using a rice cooker is most common, as this heats via an element slowly. No flames or sparks. This also gives us more control over the temperature.

Add your mix to the rice cooker, but do not exceed more than 3/4 full. Set your temperatures to 210–230 °F (99–110 °C).

If you have room in the pot for more as the solution evaporates, keep topping up the rice cooker. But do not exceed 3/4 full, to avoid spillages.

If the cannabis oil reaches over 300 °F (149 °C). It can burn and will be unusable. To prevent this from happening, add a few drop of water as the solution evaporates. The water will evaporate along with the isopropyl, but it will help keep the temperature down.

Step 5: Collect Your Cannabis Oil

After all of the Alcohol has evaporated, you will be left with a brown greasy substance. This is Rick simpson oil. Use syringes to suck up the oil. Place a cap on the end of the syringes to prevent spillage.

Use syringes to collect the oil

Your yield of oil will be between 10 and 25 % of the weight of plant matter you started with. This will depend on the initial THC and CBD content of the buds.

The amount of buds and alcohol may differ for you, but the process is the same. Just be careful when it comes to ventilation whilst evaporating the alcohol!

  1. sorry but ISO is poisonous. why bother with all that when a tincture can be made with 100% ethanol or even with 150proof vodka.

  2. Let’s just say isopropyl is super strong in smell  😂 that thing makes me feel all dizzy when I’m up close near it. I’ve indulged in cannabis for around 10 years but only the past  10-12 months I’ve been trying the rso method to help with my tics & etc.

I’m sure this thread deserves to be in a easier to find location!!

Its in the main menu mate, guides, extracts and edibles, I think its already in a pretty easy location really 🙂

😂😂😂😂😂😂I must be taking the back door to get here!!

  4. @macky, yep I can get grain alcohol right now as we speak but it’ll be expensive, but probably the best to use. I could use the others but I feel it would limit the use of it as far as oral ingestion, idk. Maybe I’ll start off smaller, that might be best. I can buy one bottle and not 8-10. lol  Thanks for taking a stroll down Reality Lane with me, I feel much better now. lol 🙂

  5. I’m getting things together for a RSO run, and looking into the different alcohols to use. Everclear, straight grain alcohol is the best and most $$ I think, gotta finish investigating, ISO would be next and preferable 90 proof or higher but haven’t found that, (by the gallon), yet either, the Ethanol they say you can use but I’m not finding a % rating on the common hardware store items, there is a Ethanol that is as high as .999%, but I don’t want to use something that I don’t know the background on.  My recipe calls for two gallons of alcohol.

  6. @unshaw yeah it shouldn’t catch fire, that would be the iso. It should bubble but not sizzle. The sizzle I’m talking about is like when you you cook a toastie sandwich with tomato In it and the tomato juice comes out and hits the hot plate, it makes a bit of a sizzle sound.

@unshaw i put a little in a hot dab banger and if it sizzles it needs a little more evap, if it smokes its ready to go, I don’t smoke the rso it’s just as a tester method, you can also do the same thing with a hot knife etc 🙂

Yo Bubble, did you mean if it makes a sizzling sound it’s still got more evap needed and if it produces smoke it’s ready to go??
Mine made a slight sizzle, made some black smoke, then caught fire, the fire came after about 1 my in constant flame on the flat of a double sided razer blade

It’s very fun to make. … I’m also making infused Absynth ….coz … savagery

  8. @unshaw yeah I mean it’s not impossible to evap iso but you have to make sure it all comes out or you risk consuming the bad stuff. But at least with grain alcohol it’s less dangerous 🙂 same idea just using a different version of solvent.

  9. Cheers dude, that explains why my lil concentrate bowls for my vape are made quartz, I just thought I was getting the food crystal energy into my lungs💪💪💪
I too am scared of using ISO!! But I also love to follow a recipe!

  10. @unshaw lol sorry bro a banger is like a quartz bowl you use on a bong for dabs, you heat it up and drop your dab concentrate of choice in 🙂
i get my iso from a company here in aus, but i usually make my oils with extremely high proof grain alcohol if i am consuming it, i will only use stuff made with iso for topicals because i get paranoid i haven’t evaped enough etc.

  11. I’m holding a plenty wondering what a banger is??? 😂😂  Oh burn it with a lighter??? I did did that on a spoon to mix in my terps to make a cart and I didn’t get no sizzles!!! YAAAAYYYY safe lungs!!
If you have an ISO brand recommendation od really appreciate it!, I can’t work out what’s food grade and what’s not on Amazon 🥲🥲

Is there a specific type of food grade ISO alcohol

I use food grade ISO, but you can use grain alcohol, usually “Everclear" if you can get that 🙂 I hope this helps man

  13. Hey team!! Is there a specific type of food grade ISO alcohol I’m gonna need for this??
Im gonna be making something with decarbed weed and strong drinking alcohol using the same method, just because I can really…. Would I be making honey oil?? Was my decarb necessary??

  14. Personally, I have never grown weed to produce CBD , I just prefer to use iSum ranked hemp CBD products that have zero THC. Actually CBD makes miracles. It has helped keep all the aches and pains in my joints in check and I have been able to double my workout levels at the gym
