What to do With Leftover Trim

When your cannabis plants come to harvest, you will trim away all of the leaves around the buds. Sometimes, you may even cut off the smaller buds, known as popcorn buds or “larf”. This, is known as trim, and it is often waste. Growers will throw it away, because they don’t know what to do with leftover trim.

There may not be a lot of it, if you’re just harvesting a couple of plants. But, you can save it up, and after a few harvests, you will have enough to use for making extracts. Over all, this increases your yield from your grow, as you will be getting more from the plant than you would if you threw the trim away.

Freezing Cannabis Trimmings

First off, after harvest, or when you have taken the tip leaves off your cannabis plant, put them into a freezer. This is ideal if you do not have much, and would like to save the trim to add to future crops.

Even if you intend to use the trim soon, freezing it is still a good idea. The THC crystals will be brittle, and will break off easily when they are frozen. So, freezing the trim, will help get more THC out of it.

Using Trim to Make Extracts

When you have enough trim, you can use it to make many different kinds of extracts. You can make Shatter, RSO, Dry Ice Hash, and even rosin, easily at home, using cannabis trim. These are great ways to consume cannabis, and a great example of what to do with leftover trim. And why you shouldn’t waste it!

Shatter

Shatter is a hard resinous cannabis extract made by using butane, and Isopropyl alcohol. The THC crystal are dissolved into the solvents, and then the solvent are evaporated, leaving behind pure cannabis oils and resins.

It is a favourite amongst smokers. And you can make your own by saving up the left over trim, and following this guide.

How to Make Shatter

Dry Ice Hash

One of the easiest forms of cannabis extracts to make. All you need is “bubble bags”, dry ice, and your cannabis trim.

You place the leftover trim into a container, and add some dry ice. Put a bubble bag over the top of the container. You then turn it upside down, and shake onto a clean surface.

How to Make Dry Ice Hash!

RSO, Rick Simpson Oil

Famous for its use in cannabis medicines, RSO is a cannabis extract made by using isopropyl alcohol, to dissolve Trichomes and cannabinoids. The alcohol is then evaporated, leaving you with a thick dark brown oil.

When making RSO, you will need to be in a well ventilated area, and away from naked flames or sparks. RSO can be mixed with carrier oils, this will improve bioavailability of your cannabis medicines. See our guides on making and dosing cannabis medicines, and also, how to make RSO!

Making Rosin out of Trim

Rosin, is a solvent free, chemical fee cannabis extract. It is made by applying pressure and heat to cannabis flowers, to squeeze out resins, terpenes, and trichomes.

This is very easy to make, and is also popular for cannabis users who like dabbing, or vaping cannabis with THC E Juice.

There are so many different things you can do with your trim, the only thing you shouldn’t do with it, is throw it away! Save it up, store it in a freezer until you have enough to make enough extracts.
